Werder Bremen go green

By: Jan | April 14th, 2008

A new-look Weserstadion to fit the club’s colours is on its way and should be ready by the end of 2009.

Werder had to cope with bitching/suing neighbours and exploding steel costs, which delayed and crippled their original plans for the Weserstadion. They eventually ditched the expansion plans and stuck to a makeover. The curves will be straightened to bring them close to the pitch. The last remnants of the old track and field Weserstadion will be gone. New VIP boxes and catering facilities will generate more revenue. A variable sized block for the travelling support will help to make more tickets available to home fans. A new shell made of glass and solar panels will help to get rid of the current bunker look. A new roof plastered with solar panels will make sure, that the Weserstadion can completely cover its own energy bill and supply another 200 households in Bremen with their yearly energy needs.

On the other hand, Werder fans will have to live with a stadium limited to a capacity of 42.500. And Werder Bremen will need to look elsewhere for substantially higher revenue sources or charge a premium for tickets.

That’s a lot of video for not a lot of updating. A big team like them deserve a bigger stadium — that’s 30k less than Dortmund, and 20k less than Berlin. On the other hand, producing more than enough energy to cover their own usage is an excellent step forward… maybe they can put the savings toward a new midfielder…

There are lots of clubs ahead of Bremen, when it comes to stadium capacity. In fact, there are 15.

Though, looking at the video you can also see one limiting factor. There is a lot of river and there are a lot of houses but little in the sense of highways, railway stations and parking space. So, the traffic situation makes things difficult and even their original expansion plans were limited to 8000 extra seats because of that. Bremen made the mistake to take the old (1909) Weserstadion and renovate and upgrade it in babysteps. They should have dumped the place twenty years ago. Well, hindsight and foresight… ;-)

But I could see Bremen getting into trouble in a few years once clubs like Hamburg or Schalke have paid back most of the credits for their stadiums. Because those two already announced that they would be able to invest €10m-€20m more on players each season…

At least they get enough spectators to need to expand. Over at Hertha they specualted about moving to somewhere smaller! The 70,000 capacity Olympic Stadium is just too big. They only fill it once a year for the Bayern game. Some teams would be happy to have 35,000 come and watch regularly but when the stadium is only half full the atmosphere is a bit crap!
