The Numbers Game: Matchday 14

This week we pay tribute to the Fibonacci sequence and wonder what Hertha has to do with it.

0. Bayer Leverkusen haven’t lost a game in the Bundesliga yet. They are the only undefeated team. It’s still a bit early to say the title is their’s to lose, but the doubts concerning the team’s title credentials derived from the club’s Neverkusen past are fading away.

1. The number of Hamburg players who aren’t out nursing serious injuries, aren’t down with the flu and who are fully fit. The number might not be 100% accurate, but it feels accurate.

1. The number of matches or days Markus Babbel has left as a Stuttgart coach. The media reports coming out of Stuttgart couldn’t come to an agreement there.

2. The number of points Hertha Berlin’s new coach Friedhelm Funkel won in the seven games since he took charge of the team.

3. The number of points Hertha Berlin’s former coach Lucien Favre won in the seven games that lead up to his dismissal.

5. Hertha Berlin racked up five points after 14 matches. No team has ever managed to retain its’ Bundesliga status with so few points at this point in the season.

8. Wolfsburg’s players were caught offside eight times against Werder Bremen – the highest of any team this weekend. The existence of Werder Bremen’s offside trap had been one of those urban myths of the Bundesliga – until this season.

13. Hertha Berlin are now 13 games without a victory in the Bundesliga – 20 still to go.

-21. Hertha’s goal difference. It shouldn’t surprise that it’s the worst in the league. What should come as a surprise though, is the fact that Hertha doesn’t have the worst offense. This dubious honor goes to Cologne who managed a meagre seven goals so far. That’s 10 million Euros well spent.
