Champions/Europa League Round of 16/32 Draw

By: Jan | December 18th, 2009

No easy games for the Bundesliga clubs, but with the odd exception, no giants need to be killed either.

Champions League Round of 16

Stuttgart vs Barcelona
First Leg: Stuttgart, 23rd February 2010, 20.45h CET
Second Leg: Barcelona, 17th March 2010, 20.45h CET

A very even tie. Barcelona have the second leg at home, which could give them a small advantage. It’ll be interesting to see what Stuttgart’s new coach Christian Gross can do with the team until February and what players Stuttgart sign in January. Factors which could easily swing the tie in Stuttgart’s favor.

Bayern vs Fiorentina
First Leg: Munich, 17th February 2010, 20.45h CET
Second Leg: Florence, 9th March 2010, 20.45h CET

Bayern and Fiorentina met in Group F last season with Bayern winning the first match 3-0 at home and drawing the second match 1-1 in Florence. Bayern fans wouldn’t mind a repeat of those results, but they’ll face a more mature Fiorentina side this time around. Although, If Bayern’s recent revival isn’t just a storm in a teacup, then Fiorentina will face a much improved Bayern side as well. Bayern will certainly fancy their chances to progress to the next round.

Europa League Round of 32

Hamburg vs Eindhoven
First Leg: Hamburg, 18th February 2010, 21.05h CET
Second Leg: Eindhoven, 25th February 2010, 19.00h CET

Last season Hamburg cruised to the next round with a 4-0 aggregate win over Dutch side Nijmegen. They certainly won’t have it as easy against Fred Rutten’s Eindhoven and neither will they have the advantage of playing the second leg at home. Hamburg certainly need to earn their ticket to Hamburg.

Villarreal vs Wolfsburg
First Leg: Villarreal, 18th February 2010, 19.00h CET
Second Leg: Wolfsburg, 25th February 2010, 21.05h CET

Villareal are playing a topsy-turvy season just like Wolfsburg, though they’ve recently been getting results in the league again, while Wolfsburg are sliding down the table. Villareal certainly have the European experience to be considered favorites to win this tie. Wolfsburg will have to fix their defensive problems and possibly their coaching problem as well. Then they’ll have a chance to progress to the next round.

Twente vs Werder
First Leg: Enschede, 18th February 2010, 19.00h CET
Second Leg: Bremen, 25th February 2010, 19.00h CET

The in-form team of the Dutch league meets the mostly-in-form team of the Bundesliga. This should be a fun game to watch with Werder being slight favorites.

Hertha vs Benfica
First Leg: Berlin, 18th February 2010, 21.05h CET
Second Leg: Lisbon, 23rd February 2010, 18.00h CET

Hertha would have certainly preferred to play a team, that ensures certain elimination and a packed Olympiastadion for a bit of extra cash. Benfica probably can only make sure of the part about certain elimination.

Europa League Round of 16
11 – 18 March 2010

In case the Bundesliga side advances to the next round, the potential opponents will be:

Hamburg/Eindhoven vs Bilbao/Anderlecht
Kazan/Tel-Aviv vs Villareal/Wolfsburg
Hertha/Benfica vs Copenhagen/Marseille
Brugge/Valencia vs Twente/Werder

I am SO excited about Werder drawing Twente! They should both be absolutely cracking matches – can’t wait!

Yeah I give Stuttgart the slight edge over Barcelona, mainly because I’d take Pogrebnyak/Cacau over Messi/Henry/Ibra any day.

Jan if Bayern knocks Fiorentina out, Inter and Milan lose to Manchester and Chelsea in the CL, and two of the four German EL teams advance whilst no Italian teams progress, (all very possible outcomes) can Germany overtake Italy’s UEFA coefficient this year?

stuttgart- barca a very even tie? son, i bet some of the stuttgart players will quit football after these games with barca! in case you havent heard, they are the title holders of this competition.

@Nick: I think every extra condition you had to use in your question made it less likely that it’ll actually happen. It’s much easier to keep it this way: if the Bundesliga earns more coefficient points than Serie A each season then the Bundesliga will take third spot. And that will be difficult enough.

@Dumitru: that was certainly not the most accurate analysis I’ve ever written. But maybe that was intentional. ;-)

The only way and I mean only way VFB have a shot in this tie with Barca is if they keep a clean sheet at home and get a goal or two, without the clean sheet at home it is over IMO because Barca can put up 3 or 4 goals very easily at home in the Nuo Camp.

I am expecting more good things from Bayern in the matchup with Fiorentina also. “Die roten” form has been scintilating lately and that is without Ribery and Robben only playing cameo’s so I would have to guess that with those two fully healthy anything is possible for Bayern especially if they have the right mindset! Fiorentina are a dangerous side as they have proved against Liverpool and Lyon, but I think that Bayern has more talent and if LvG has then into the game mentally they will prevail.

“if LvG has then into the game mentally they will prevail.”

True, the experience of having to go to Turin and win and then do it so emphatically has proven to be invaluable for the whole team. They can take this confidence into their next Champions League game and then the fact that the second leg is in Florence doesn’t even need to be a disadvantage.

you cant compare juve with fiorentina. juve is a team with no leadership, while viola has a genius of a coach in cesare prandelli, who, for the last 5 years, managed to build a very solid team. with no injuries and in good form, viola can beat bayern.

I wasn’t comparing Juve with Fiorentina. I was rather talking about the positive effect the Juve match had on Bayern and that they can take this into their next match against Fiorentina. You rather want to be confident and have others rather not wanting to draw you. Had Bayern e.g. only just about scraped through with a fluke goal in the 90th minute after being under siege the whole time, then the psychological effect obviously wouldn’t have been like that.

But LvG has already made clear that Fiorentina are a different team now and that past results mean nothing in football. So he is aware that Fiorentina are a threat and not someone to just brush aside.

Dumitru, in the CL anything can happen and it comes to play in the knockout stage just as the group stage. Yes, the viola can beat Bayern, no one said that they can’t. My question is how long you can keep your form up in the CL? It has been up and down in the Serie A and what happens if that transfers over to the CL? Bayern have NOT hit their top gear yet and sooner or later will have Ribery and Robben ready to go, whether that will coincide with the viola matchup is anybodys guess, but it is a possibility that Prandelli better be ready for. I expect a couple very tough games and may the better team win.

the only way stuttgart will beat barca is by making sure that the barca players suffer from food-poisoning or very bad colds…..
i would love to see stuttgart through, but I just can’t see that happening…
