It did look like Westermann (why is that not a surprise) lost his man, but it was in the air so long Neuer should have went and got to it.

Oh well, maybe I am asking for too much, I mean Kahn did single-handedly bring us to the final in 02. By the way do you think our defense with Tasci and Westermann is better or worse than with Ramelow, Metzleder, Linke?

I think we both aren’t too impressed by Westermann in the centre, but otherwise the individual quality of the current German player pool is certainly higher compared to the players available during the recent talent drought. Hrubesch proved that with the right set of players you only need a couple of weeks to build a rock solid defense (U21). Löw on the other hand currently struggles to get structure back into his team for years. I hope that he still somehow manages to inject a good tournament team spirit into his squad and get things together in time.

I expect Bayern to bottle it unless both Robben and Ribery show up, but comparatively easy path to the final for the winner.

The EL sides got a very favorable draw, unfortunately they will have to meet in the semifinal. Then again I am not sure they could have made the final on their own, especially not Hamburg.

I am really disappointed Werder were knocked out, no more games for Marin or Ozil. Was Mertesacker culpable on any of those goals? I don’t see how Low can ignore Marin any longer, he must be taken to South Africa. He can setup goals, score them, and ahem fell down easily in the penalty box.

I am nearly sure, that there will be a german semi-final…
Wolfsburg, with Grafite(back) and Dzeko(and Martins from the bench) will score and they will have Benaglio back (although Hitz wasn t bad yesterday).
The last seven games were 6 wins and 1 draw (18:5 goals) for Wolfsburg. So you can say, they are on a run…
Btw:Imo Wolfsburg rise has started in the first half of the Bayern-match,although they lost by some goals…

Hamburg-Lüttich will be the same as the other matches in EL for Hamburg: Hamburg wins first leg and survives somehow the second leg ;)

    Liverpool-Lissabon: 50/50
    Athletico-Valencia: 60/40 (important players missing)

Robben and Ribery could both show up and then there’s still the chance that Bayern’s defense will bottle it I think. Anyway, at the very least it’s a good benchmark.

The EL draw certainly was almost perfect. You would rather play Valencia or Liverpool in a one-off final than over two legs for sure.

Without seeing much of the Bremen match, I guess you could always blame their risky offside trap first and then blame the players and be about right.

I guess Löw will also certainly call Marin up for SA. But he just doesn’t seem to have much use for him in his line-ups. At least Marin would be a much better super sub than Odonkor. :-)

Jansen is on fire as well.

BVBFan: Barzagli should be back as well. Player for player Wolfsburg certainly have the better squad. With the DFB-Pokal coming up, Hamburg will have a chance to recharge their batteries a bit. Maybe that helps. I wouldn’t mind a more comfortable two-legged victory for a change. At some point Hamburg should look like a genuine Europe League contender and not just a side that somehow manages to hang in there. :-)

Low has no excuse to exclude Marin from SA. Hitzlsperger is toast. There is absolutely no reason at all anymore to select him for the NT. I actually feel a little bad about it!

Jansen is bound to get sick when the time comes. Right now he would be a lot more useful than Podolski. I still remember his good game against Serbia before the Euros.

Speaking of which Ballack will more likely than not get an injury the night before the final as usual. His age is showing, but he is still our linchpin. He certainly held Chelsea together. Is it me or has his fouls gotten a lot more cynical lately.

Hitzlspeger is a nice guy and it’s sad to see that his career took such a nosedive. I may not see a need for him in the NT but I don’t hate him of course. Unfortunately he made a panic move to Lazio, that only made matters worse. I hope he returns to maybe a midtable club in the Bundesliga in the summer, or maybe has a go at the EPL again, and enjoys a good club career.

Labbadia is the worst coach ever. As much as I loved Huuuuuub, Magath coming in would’ve had the guys in shape. Watching them now is pathetic. Though not having the full D seemed to hurt some, watching the complete defensive mental lapses was painful. And that falls on the coach.

that is to say, if we still had BMJ, we’d win the EL this year hands down. Although we have been knocked out by Germans the last two years…

How much of Leverkusen’s success this season can be attributed to Labbadia’s departure? A whole lot, I’d say as an HSV supporter . . .

Well, they are in a bit of a crisis now as well. The same time last season they were long dumped to midtable mediocrity though.

That being said. I think Labbadia is potentially a really good coach. The type of football Hamburg played earlier this season was fantastic and that’s not something you make a team do just like that. But it seems he then starts to dig his grave, by possibly overtraining his players and making mistakes on personal levels, which contributes to him losing the dressing room. Details he could iron out with a bit more experience and willingness to adapt. At the moment it’s doubtful he’ll gain this experience at Hamburg though. And when Hamburg sacks him, no other Bundesliga club will touch him for a while…

Jan here is an interesting scenario that I am too lazy to solve. If the current BL table for European spots stays the way it is – Schalke/Werder qualifies for CL, Bayer/BVB qualifies for EL, Werder wins the Pokal, HSV wins the EL – then who takes the last EL spot for the EL? Would it be Stuttgart being the next team on the table or FC Augsburg being the only Pokal semifinalist not already qualified for Europe?

The 6th placed team qualifies for the Europa League no matter what happens (i.e. Werder qualifying for the El or CL). That means Stuttgart will qualify for the Europa league.

If Hamburg somehow win the Europa League, then they’ll be automatically qualified for the EL group stage as well and the Bundesliga will have 7 instead of 6 clubs in Europe.

Jan, is there any possibility to write an article about the referee decisions of the second leg between Fiorentina and Bayern? I get sick when i must read that Bayern won only by referee help or that Fiorentina was robbed…
I remember two missing offside calls before Fiorentinas goals number 2 and 3 and i remember Klose being two times in eccelent position with an uncorrect offside call…
But try to bring the story on the front page.
Justice is necessary otherwise we get to hear these lies for a long time.

Nice primer; thanks for the info. I’m looking forward to see how post-WC Bundesliga teams will be doing on the European stage this year. Here’s to hoping that Bayern can do a repeat of last season’s extravaganza and that Bremen and Stuttgart catch good international runs, too.

‘Just in time everybody has an iPhone’
Believe it or not, I do not have an iPhone. The iPod is the closest you can get from me. :( Not that I am grumbling about it.

    Anyways…

Apart from being aware of the Europa League match against Molde, noticed that the team I support VfB Stuttgart will be playing their DFB-Pokal first-round match on 14 August. A day before my birthday, indeed.

‘Hamburg and Schalke go head to head on Saturday night.’
Now that Raul has officially being presented at Schalke, it will be kind of interesting considering of Ruud van Nistelrooy who is at Hamburg. The Real Madrid connection, that is.
