Lukas Podolski picks up more Honors
By: Jan | June 5th, 2007
One year ago at the World Cup: Lukas Podolski scores three goals and narrowly beats Christiano Ronaldo, who probably took one dive too many, to the Best Young Player Award. This season Lukas has upped the tally and scored a total of four goals which earned him yet another honor though of dubious quality this time. In a survey among 268 Bundesliga players conducted by German sports magazine kicker Podolski was voted to be the disappointment or biggest letdown of the season. Meanwhile VfL Bochum’s coach Marcel Koller seems to be eager to lure Podolski away from Bayern Munich. At least that’s the latest rumor. Super-unlikely but it’s worth pointing out that it was Koller who discovered Podolski back in his days with 1. FC Köln.

He can do better. I’m crossing my fingers that Klose doesn’t leave Werder this year so that Podolski gets more playing time. I imagine Toni/Poldi would be a pretty potent combination.

I think that he needs an environment that doesn’t mount too much pressure and expectations on him. And it’s important that his coach has some trust in him. He’s quite sensitive to those things atm. His performances in the national team remained very solid. He just had a lot of problems gaining ground in Munich. I think that Felix Magath didn’t help here either. He consistently put him on the bench, only gave him one match here and there where he could prove himself. Ottmar Hitzfeld has already done a better job there so I expect to see a much improved Podolski next season. As long as he gets to play in the first team…
