Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Uniao Leiria
Leverkusen controlled a good portion of the match but were always vulnerable at the back and too generous with their chances up front. They were lucky that two 50:50 decisions by the referee went in their favour. The result is OK, though Leira got an important away goal so Leverkusen has to be much more solid at the back in the second leg. Some potentially very bad news could come out of this match, as Bernd Schneider had to be substituted early in the second half, after suffering a knee injury. Rolfes and Kießling scored the goals for Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Belenenses
I’m sure Angela will blog about this result in more detail. Anyway, congratulations to Belenenses for a well organised defence that held Munich mostly at bay. I don’t think Bayern will have much trouble reaching the group stage though. Belenenses would have needed to get an away goal. Bayern’s only goal was scored by Luca Toni. Probek has uploaded a nice panorama picture of the Allianz Arena during the match to his flickr account.

Nuremberg 0-0 Rapid Bucarest
Nuremberg did their best to win this match but Bucarest’s defending was solid enough and the few good chances for the club were wasted - most notably by Charisteas. Bucarest only showed hints of their strong counter attacking football that Nuremberg had been warned about. It’s a good thing Nuremberg kept a clean sheet and now they have to hope to score an away goal and get either a draw or win to secure the group stages.
