The Bundesliga Offside returns… with a Trophy!
By: Jan | July 8th, 2008Not a single Bundesliga based player got his hands on the Euro trophy, so it was up to our little blog to pull the chestnuts out of the fire. Our very own Chris from the Hamburg Offside has, presumably, won the Euro Bracket Predictor, edging out fellow blogger Ian Rose by a single point. At least going by Chris’ Worldwide Leader post – the bracket has been reset to pre-final standings, as Ian Rose, who is managing the whole thing, is currently out of town. But unless there are some major miscalculations, Chris will be officially #1 soon. If you ever wondered why some people read football blogs and why other people write them… OK, based on the quality of the comments on this blog this argument doesn’t really stand a chance, but congratulations to Chris anyway!
After going through the grind of tournament blogging over at the Germany blog, I’m also more than happy to return to the cosy and relaxed world of club football – which also happens to be head and shoulders above nationality based football, when it comes to silly clichés and stereotypes. You can expect insanely good-humoured blog posts as a direct result from that.

As there’s really no other place (yet) to comment on it, I just wanted to acknowledge here a nice move by Köln picking up Ishiaku from Duisburg. A newly promoted team that can trot out a frontline of Helmes and Ishiaku is not typical. Whatever other problems they may have, it looks like they are serious about staying up, and they’re definitely going to score some goals. I look for a more competitive Bundesliga this season when I see moves like this.

Ian’s been away on holiday as well. I am back and ready to collect my prize. Good thing I can use it on a strip; I am still on crutches until 15 July!

And yes, besides the 2008 Intertoto Cup, this is the only trophy Hamburg have won in 25 years. Ha!

Welcome back Chris. Much has happened at the HSV since you were away. Not really but, VDV being linked to Real Madrid. He has rubbished those rumours though – http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overseas/germany/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/08/07/11/SOCCER_Ger-Hamburg_Van_der_Vaart.html&TEAMHD=germany
I swear, I was surprised when the news first broke about early this week. But then given Marca reported it, you know you have to take it with a huge pinch of salt.

As an HSV supporter, I don’t know whether it is a good thing or bad thing that he appears ready to stick around for another season. Good-he is clearly the greatest talent on the squad, and one of the better in all of Europe; bad-if he doesn’t leave before 2009, he walks for free and HSV get nothing for him when he leaves.
