Viva Colonia: From New York to South Africa to Cologne
By: Jan | September 26th, 2008When a Brazilian girl on the streets of New York starts to chant the carnival song Viva Colonia…
..and when a bunch of kids in South Africa join in…
…and when 50000 fans in Cologne’s Rhein Energie Stadion do the same…
…then this global Cologne lovefest can only be explained with this:
A rare big win against a big team by FC Cologne. Since I’m looking forward to a long and potentially dreadful relegation avoidance season, I have to cherish those moments. Schalke have been piss poor to be fair, but Cologne still played their best match of the season so far.

I didn’t know you were Koln. Well I’m even happier for the result in that case
I was really impressed with some of the play and with 7 points already, I think there is every indication you will stay up. What did you think of my ratings for the players?Posted from

Now the song is being stuck in my head, Jan. I was actually clapping along to it!
Anyhow, thanks for the last video. Friday matches are always shown live at where I am, though it’s on early Saturday morning. I only watched the first few minutes (I needed my sleep, you know
). And so imagine when I woke up for my breakfast and when I flipped through the teletext seeing the news of Cologne beating Schalke, I was like thinking – ‘Jan will be so happy!’.
Probably whatever Daum had told the players in the wake of the recent losses must have, worked.

A deserved win. Cologne was giving Schalke way too much space near the end, but still, they never camped out in back and tried not to lose, they did keep the pressure on and never showed any intimidation, quite the opposite of their match with Bayern.

Great stuff with the “Viva Colonia”, for a great win.
By the way, great site over here. Wasn’t there a bit on the badges for the various Bundesliga clubs on this site a while back?
