Rumour of the Day: Super Mario to Italy
By: Jan | June 21st, 2007
The silly season is slowly reaching its climax. Just yesterday it was Bernd Schneider who made headlines with rumours that Real Madrid might be interested in his service. One day later it’s Stuttgart’s Mario Gomez. Juventus are opening the financial floodgates to build a competitive Serie A squad that I guess should bring them back to the international stage. And they are willing to pay as much as 25 million Euros for the 21 year old striker. Incidentally that is exactly the amount sporting director Horst Heldt announced would be the minimum bid. It’s just that he was joking when he said that. What he really meant to say was “We don’t sell Gomez under any circumstances”. Although, with 25 million Euros they could buy the complete set of strikers they were interested in. Afonso, Gomis, Bravo and Ewerthon could be enough to replace one Gomez. But it would sent out the wrong signal to the rest of the team. The first generation of the so called Young Wild Ones was sold out by the club, and Heldt and coach Armin Veh are keen to keep the young talent together this time. Mario Gomez’ agent Ferber wasn’t willing to comment on the whole matter while Heldt remains rigid “I heard of those rumours as well. But for us one thing is clear anyway: We won’t let Mario go.” You can take a look at the Google translated article that broke the news here. Sorry for taking so long when it comes to embracing the charming talent of Google Translate. I’ll from now on repackage all links to German sites into nifty little Google Translate gems. And the results are great indeed. Turning Turin’s Stadio delle Alpi into the Stadium depression Alpi could reveal some unknown foreshadowing qualities of this service.

Wow, 25 million. I hope Mario doesn’t go yet. Stuttgart need him and he could use a little more time to mature. Plus, I don’t want to have to start watching Serie A just to get my Super Mario fix.
I can’t wait to see him and Poldi paired up front for the national team sometime soon.

Yes, I really hope so too. I read opinions on some forums that if Juventus pays €25m then Stuttgart should/needs to cash in. But I think that there currently aren’t too many rich Bundesliga clubs (ok, there is actually only one really rich club) who can buy star to superstar category players, so they should do everything to keep their homegrown potential stars. Otherwise the Bundesliga will soon end up as a feeder-league for the rich clubs.

He’s too young to leave yet. I think he should wait until next year before leaving Germany.
I always thought it was irresponsible to dump young players into large clubs without preparing them. Podolski comes to mind. German players appear to mature slower than their South American counterparts, which is why I think Gomez, maturer than other German youngsters at he is, should stay in Stuttgart for the good of his own career.
He’s an amazing talent. I’d hate to see him go the way of Rau or Lauth. Stuttgart is a very promising team. They should be thinking of how to defend their Bundesliga title and do well on the Champion’s League, not how to make money by selling their young players!Posted from

Yup, I hope/think that he stays in Stuttgart. It appears to me that it’s probably his agent who has the most ineterest in that deal. For now the rumours surrounding Gomez competely dried up anyway.
Good point about the young talents moving clubs too early. Although it’s also the fault of the big clubs who sign those players and can’t support them properly. I feel that Stuttgart or Bremen have an excellent environment to develop talent. The pressure in Bayern is very high which can cause problems for players. E.g. Schweinsteiger was supposed to take over responsibility in the miedfield this season. A task that was, at least in a club like Bayern, too big for him to handle. So it will be very interesting to see how all the young talent in the new Munich squad performs and whether Hitzfeld has better soft skills than Magath in that respect.
