Quote of the Day: Rudi Völler’s Spiderman Collection

By: Jan | December 29th, 2008

Die Spinne

Q: Herr Völler, how is your Spiderman collection doing?
Völler: (laughs) It’s in a box in the basement of my parents’ house in Hanau.
Q: How did you end up collecting (of all things) Spiderman comics in your childhood?
Völler: It was simply a hip thing to do in the Sixties. And by the way: it wasn’t called Spiderman then. It was called “Die Spinne”. But believe me: I couldn’t afford to buy every issue, because they were damn expensive. But then I still got them all. At 23 – I was playing for Werder Bremen – I drove down to Frankfurt to the publisher and bought all issues they had in stock; for 120 (Deutsche) Mark. At that time this served as a confirmation for me, that I had accomplished something in my life.
