Refereeing Basics: How not to show a Red Card

By: Jan | March 3rd, 2008

Felix Brych

Here’s referee Felix Brych showing Duisburg’s Bojan Vrucina a yellow-red card gangsta-style.

Well, being a referee won’t make you the coolest bloke in the neighbourhood, nor do the players on the pitch respect you, neither do the coaches on the sidelines and TV stations celebrate every mistake you make with seemingly endless slow-motion replays. But trying to score bonus points by imposing gangsta-chic on your referring won’t help your cause either. I’ve been passed the knowledge that holding a gun gangsta-style is a really easy way to miss the target. The same apparently applies to red cards. Vrucina had yet to receive his first yellow, when Brych tried to sent him off. Luckily for Vrucina, Brych could be convinced otherwise and he probably also reverted to showing cards the good old way again.
