Matchday 13: VfB Stuttgart 3-1 Bayern Munich

By: Jan | November 10th, 2007

Serving the most important result first, before regular matchday coverage resumes tomorrow. Goals by Gomez and Bastürk for Stuttgart and Luca Toni scored a late consolation goal for Bayern. Lucio will miss a couple of matchdays after his red card, and different to the commentator in this video, it looked very much like a deserved red card for him when I saw the scene on TV.

I will keep saying it until I make everyone sick: Bayern are just not that good in a 4-4-2. The two holders (Ze Roberto and MVB) in front of Altintop/Ribery/Sweinsteiger (or Kroos) controls the midfield and opens up the attack. What does this mean, well I should replace the General :)

I was actually surprised this game took place considering Bayern had only played against Bolton on the Thursday evening. Was wondering if this was their decision or a Bundesliga ruling? Two games in three days is hard enough for any side.

To be fair, Bayern was exhausted. But _also_ to be fair, Stuttgart walloped them, and thoroughly. The first goal by Gomez was amazing, not in a stunningly-brilliant, this-is-what-football-is-all-about way, but in a get-it-done, this-is-what-football-is-all-about way. And I’m consistently amazed at how Gomez can score with his hair if needs be.

Although on the stunningly-brilliant front, Jan, are you going to be able to come up with some clips of Diego’s goals from yesterday? I’d love to see them, and I can’t seem to find them anywhere on the internet.

Chris: given the way Rummenigge has talked about Hitzfeld lately, you should have your CV and a ticket to Munich ready.;-)

OS Guy: Yeah, that’s due to a stupid ruling by the Bundesliga, or better, a stupidly rigid TV contract that doesn’t allow to move another fixture to Sunday…

Angharad: I’ll see what I can do about the two goals by Diego… :-)

This was terrible… they just lacked any energy at all on the field. It was like watching 11 guys who’d never played with each other before. I think it was a mistake to rest Van Bommel. If you ask me, he’s the midfield general.

Chris, I’m starting to believe you, but not because of this game.
