Jens Lehmann - Early Season Highlights

By: Jan | October 2nd, 2008

We’re only one and a half months into the new season and Jens Lehmann has already produced two slapstick gems for me and you to enjoy:

This one was against Hungarian side ETO Györ in the UEFA Cup’s twenty fourth pre-qualifying round, which preceded the UEFA Cup first round group stage qualifying round. Stuttgart were already leading 4-0, so no harm done.

And this one was from tonight’s UEFA Cup first round tie against Bulgarian side Cherno More Varna. His blunder helped to make this match a bit more dramatic. Stuttgart had taken a 2-1 away win into their home match and eventually fell behind 2-0 against Varna in the 80th minute. Hitzelsperger and Gomez saved Stuttgart’s blushes with two late goals for an embarrassing 2-2 draw. So no harm done either - if you are not into reputation.

VfB Stuttgart’s coach Armin Veh is eager to extend Jens Lehmann’s one year contract for another year. Maybe because he needs a bit of comic relief every once in a while.

Although, I should be fair to Lehmann. He actually does a good job for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga - most of the time.

I hear you, Jan. :P It used to be that we have the best defence record in the league. That was early days into this season. And when I went to check the statistics on the league’s official website earlier, now Bayer Leverkusen holds the honours.

I had expected it, in view of the goals conceded. Especially those three goals against Borussia Dortmund away last week.

Oof! Embarassing! That’s a lot of celebrating from the Bulgarians for a not especially skillful goal. Methinks Herr Hildebrand may be in for a homecoming. I’d love to see that — Lehmann and Hildebrand fighting it out at Stuttgart. Ha!

Fighting it out…I hope it’s not in the literal sense, Juliet. With Jens being ‘Mad Jens’, I am trying hard not to let my imagination run wild with what you said of him and Hilderbrand fighting it out at Stuttgart. :P

Anyhow, I should be lucky that I didn’t choke on the pizza I was eating earlier today when watching those two videos. It only makes me want to go - Geez. Sigh, it’s stressful to be a Stuttgart supporter.
