Schalke’s TraumaBy: Jan | May 17th, 2007
In light of the dramatic finish to this year’s season I thought that it might be a good idea to go back in time a bit and take a look at what is now considered to be the most thrilling Bundesliga season finale ever. Even more so because Schalke 04 was once again one of the unfortunate main protagonists. Luckily for me I wasn’t the only one who had this idea which saves me a lot of work. The official Bundesliga website has written a nice little report which recapitulates the drama of Bundeliga season 2000/2001 matchday 34. You can find it HERE.
Here are the last couple of minutes of the match between Hamburger SV and Bayern Munich. The commentary is by Marcel Reif who is also quoted in the bundesliga.de article. When Bayern Munich equalises in the 4th minute of extra time he is shouting “Goal! FC Bayern are champions! I don’t believe it! Impossible! I’ve never experienced anything like it. People, I give up. Unfathomable!”.
Here is an excerpt from the documentary “4 minutes in May”. I won’t try and translate everything the people are saying in the interviews but at least you can get a glimpse of what was happening in Schalke while Bayern Munich was still playing. People celebrated, ran on the pitch and a player even gave an interview in which he was sending a Thank You! to Hamburg for beating Bayern.
