Reality Check: No You Couldn’t

By: Jan | July 17th, 2009

There are some clubs in the Bundesliga where even Obama fails.

Cottbus

Energie Cottbus grabbed a lifeline by securing the relegation play-off spot, but ended up having not even close to a chance in their tie against FC Nuremberg, who beat them 5-0 on aggregate to end all eastern German presence in the Bundesliga.

Hertha

Hertha played one of their best ever Bundesliga seasons, yet the final push necessary to lift the trophy or at least secure Champions League football wasn’t there.

Karlsruhe

A spirited last minute fight back by Karlsruhe with victories over Bremen, Berlin and Leverkusen wasn’t enough to escape the drop.

Cottbus failed because you could count the number of German players in the first team with your hands. Then their foreign players couldn’t exactly fill the void either. Oh, and let’s not forget my favorite Cottbus is practically in Poland.
