Matchday 16: Sense and Sensibility

By: Jan | December 11th, 2007

A lot has happened but fairly little has changed this weekend. And tempers were running a bit wild.

Borussia Dortmund 6-1 Arminia Bielefeld
Borussia Dortmund have quite unexpectedly found their rhythm and added another impressive victory to their CV after beating Stuttgart last week. It was one 6-1 / 8-1 / 4-0 type of scoreline too many for the bosses of Arminia coach Ernst Middendorp. His Coach of the Century award and his ego (”I am the only one who decides my future at the club.”) couldn’t safe his job. Now you can chose whether you want Chris from The (Roma) Offside or Raphael Honigstein from the Guardian sportblog to tell you more – I’d chose both.

Bayern Munich 0-0 MSV Duisburg
Bayern Munich fans are in grave need for another one of those great three to five nil victories. The memories of the early season are fading. Check the Bayern Munich Offside for more in depth coverage of this game. Then cast your vote whether Bayern Munich had the most frustrating weekend. Finish of your Bayern Munich news day with Martha’s post about Oliver Kahn’s thoughts on Ribery and Toni and Hitzfeld’s thoughts on Kahn.

Hamburger SV 0-0 Energie Cottbus
Not really a carbon copy of the Bayern Munich match, since Hamburg played really well, but it was equally frustrating. Not in small part due to Cottbus’ goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel, who had an incredible match. Check out the Hamburg Offside for more coverage.

Hanover 96 4-3 Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen came back from being 1-3 down, came close to netting the winner and were eventually killed by Mike Hanke, who scored his first ever hat trick in the Bundesliga. Bremen also had Hugo Almeida sent off and Markus Rosenberg’s equaliser was disallowed for a very soft push on a Hanover defender. To sum it up: the best match of the weekend.

FC Nuremberg 2-1 Hertha BSC Berlin
Berlin have been handing out a lot of early Christmas presents lately. This particular present granted Nuremberg a passage out of the relegation zone. Abby will give you more on this match later. Now, Bayern Munich will travel to Berlin this coming weekend, and they definitely wouldn’t mind another nice present from Lulu. Just as the rest of the Bundesliga would be happy about a present from Lulu as well. Difficult situation…

Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Hansa Rostock
The team of the moment. A very confident 3-0 victory over Rostock sees Leverkusen closing in on the Champions League spots and in the long run, they might even have a word to say about the title. At least they might have a chance to get close enough, to make missing out on it again as painful as ever.

Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 Schalke 04
Schalke have now drawn exactly 50% of all their matches this season. So their chances of advancing to the next round in the Champions League are also exactly 50%. As the video above shows, Fabian Ernst also caused a bit of a brawl. At least some Schalke fans have the slim chance of seeing Diego as part of the Schalke squad this Christmas. Worse things have happened.
