Northern Derby: From Vander to van der Vaart

By: Jan | December 3rd, 2007

Werder Bremen’s reserve goalkeeper Christian Vander holds a unique record. In 22 Bundesliga matches he made 6 serious mistakes. This is a ratio that even Cottbus’ Tomislav Piplica can’t match.

Here’s serious mistake no. 6, where he plays a beautiful pass to Rafael van der Vaart, who was happy to half-volley lob the ball into Bremen’s net to make it 1-1. Some credit should go to Ivica Olic, who put some pressure on Vander.

Luckily for Vander, Vincent Kompany scored an own goal just minutes later to make it 2-1 and three points for Bremen.

Jan, as I watched this match I felt that this was just the break that HSV were looking for, that they would continue to pressure Bremen and would get at least 1 point if not all 3. Kompany’s deflection was gut wrenching.

If it is true that Werder Bremen are one of the clubs chasing Jens Lehmann in the January transfer window, then fans can look forward to more of the same. This error is reminiscent of some in the Arsenal keeper’s repertoire.
