Masters of the Meaningless
By: Jan | August 4th, 2008
Yesterday Hamburg won the Emirates Cup, finishing ahead of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Juventus. Hamburg had already been invited to last year’s edition of the mini-tournament, but had to cancel their participation due to an Intertoto Cup game.

In March Hamburg won said Intertoto Cup by outlasting Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup. There’s no photographic evidence of this event. It must have looked a bit like in this photo of Hamburg’s 2005 Intertoto Cup triumph over Valencia (1-0 on aggregate).

In January Hamburg won the Dubai Football Challenge by beating Brazilian side Vasco da Gama and the Chinese national team. It goes without saying that Hamburg were the defending champions.
After winning almost everything with Hamburg, Rafael van der Vaart is now keen to join Real Madrid. He needs a new challenge.

Jan, pardon the pun, it’s for real this time for van der Vaart. Hamburg have confirmed the move.
On a sidenote: I wonder if Bild will be able to handle it, given Sylvie will join him in the Spanish capital.
One very pretty WAG leaving the Bundesliga…hang on, there’s Toni girlfriend Marta.

Sylvie van der Vaart will be in the jury of some “Germany got Talent” TV format set to start airing this fall. In that sense little will have changed. Unless she cancels her contract now.
Anyway, Real have been too quick for my post.

Jan, thanks for the update. On Sylvie, I mean.
‘Anyway, Real have been too quick for my post.’
One minute van der Vaart said that he will be going to Real and the next, Hamburg’s website announced the move has been confirmed. What a day it has been.

Hey c’mon. Give Martin Jol a break. He never won at crap at the Emirates for us.
