Europa League: Hamburg 2-0 Rapid Vienna

By: Jan | December 2nd, 2009

Hamburg booked their place in the Round of 32 of the Europa League with a 2-0 victory over Rapid Vienna tonight. Marcell Jansen and Marcus Berg made sure of the victory within six minutes shortly after the break.

The Europa League is like an alternate reality for Hamburg. One where Marcus Berg can’t stop scoring. One where slim leads aren’t given up in the final 15 minutes. One where referees give close calls in Hamburg’s favor. Distraught HSV fans may wonder: Why can’t it be Europa League every day?

A draw against Tel Aviv will now be enough to secure first place in the group.

Wow! A big team like that should have a blogger! :P (Exams…)

This year i hope the Europa League is our 1st Priority. Would be nice to beat liverpool in a semi before winning the final at home against Bayern/Juve. Go big or go home…

It would be great to see Hamburg win the Europa League this year in their own arena. I hope enough of the injured players get back in the new year to help make a push to get to the final. Great to see Petric is back, and to hear that Elia’s injury is not as bad as they thought. We just need Ze and Guerrero!

I think Hamburg’s priority should be a place in the Champions League. The club has pretty much pushed the economics of Europa League football to the limit. If Hamburg want to make the next step they need to make it to the Champions League. Only then do they earn enough extra cash to sign big players without the need to sell. Only then can they convince their best young talents to stay and only then can they sign the really big sponsorship deals. If they can get both Europa League glory and a CL spot then all the better, otherwise I wonder whether they shouldn’t rather prioritize the league this time around?
