After Life: When there’s no more Room in Hell…

They will soon have a new home, conveniently situated close to the west curve of the former Volksparkstadion, now inconveniently called HSH Nordband Arena, on Hamburg’s very own graveyard; a Bundesliga first but not a completely new concept per se. The perfect place to recycle worldly leftovers for those who either dieted a bit too much on beer and sausages or who are simply long overdue old farts, and who own a Hamburger SV membership card at the same time.
The HSV graveyard will be entered through a stylised goal leading down some stairs to a pitch. Three terraces will be accessible from there and serve as the graves. Tombstones will be available with the HSV logo, but a more toned down standard version can be obtained as well. Fifteen members have already shown their interest despite the fact that the opening of the graveyard is still one year away.
Considering that Bundesliga clubs aren’t among the richest of the rich, you might wonder whether this is part of a business strategy to create new sources of income. Hamburg’s management denied any eventual plans to break into the funeral business though. The income will be solely used for maintenance and no profit will be derived from this project. It seems that funeral parlours around Hamburg approached the club, proposed the idea and asked for the club’s co-operation, as they noticed that a growing number of their customers requested a grave close to the stadium.
Look out for grandpas or grandmas around Hamburg skipping the pastor’s last rites and asking Dietmar Beiersdorfer to hand them a last minute HSV membership card instead and promising them many many titles ever after.
And as it somewhat fits with the topic of this post, here are Hamburg fans chanting “HSV Forever and Ever, HSV All the Way, All the Way” prior to last seasons final match against Alemannia Aachen.
