Schweinsteiger

Just because it didn’t work for Beckham doesn’t mean that Schweinsteiger should be denied his own bleach blonde experiment. He will captain the German national team on Saturday against Wales for the first time in his career. The usual suspects Torsten Frings and Michael Ballack are still recovering from injuries, and Bernd Schneider had one yellow card too many and will sit out a one match ban.

Does this mean Schweini will be playing center mid? Unfortunately, he couldn’t fill the playmaker role for Bayern last season, but then he was having a tough time all the way around. It will be interesting to see if time, experience and Ribery’s influence will have already had an effect.

What do you think of the controversy around Ballack & Chelsea? Raphael Honigstein had a good article in the Guardian about Chelsea’s numerous bone-headed moves. And now Eurosport is reporting that Loew is going to meet with Mourinho after the Wales match, which frankly seems a little like calling “Daddy” in… I hope Ballack can get it sorted.

I got the captain thing wrong. He has just been asked to boss the midfield but Klose will be captain. Anyway, it will be interesting to see, whether he can direct and guide the team. As you mentioned, he couldn’t handle the pressure in Munich…

I don’t really know what to think about Michael Ballack’s situation. I read the Honigstein article as well and I think he perfectly summarised the complexity of the issue. What is baffling is the fact that so much is still unknown/unclear. So maybe his injury is worse than people thought and that’s the sole reason why he wasn’t nominated. Strange though that Jogi Löw and his team didn’t know about that and proclaimed that he would feature for the national team in October.

Apart from that, Ballack and Chelsea feels wrong, whether he is injured or not. Even more so when you look back and see that alongside Chelsea both Manchester United and Real Madrid were interested in signing him. Both Madrid and Manu had a better use for him in the midfield. Anyway, it’s his decision.

Maybe all the injuries and sitting on the bench at Chelsea and his age will make him cheap enough so that Bremen can buy him, or he’ll replace van der Vaart in Hamburg next year. ;-)
