Google Translate: Paris Saint-Germain to German

I have to give some credit to Google, for not just collecting more and more sensitive data about us, but also making better and better tools. For its’ German language users seeking a French to German translation, Google Translate even tries to find a Bundesliga counterpart of the French club in question. In this case Schalke’s UEFA Cup opponent Paris Saint-Germain (3-1) turned into VfL Bochum.

So according to Google the good news for Schalke fans is, that they won a derby. The bad news is, that it wasn’t against a particularly good team. It would have been interesting to see what Google Translate would have come up with, if PSG’s coach Paul Le Guen had actually cared to bring some more of his regular starters to Germany…

  I have a screencap somewhere of Hertha translated as ‘West Ham.’ Interesting that it’s doing it in other languages, too…

  CRAZY. It also turns Italian teams in EPL sides, and some Spanish teams into the New York Red Bulls. Google is so messing with us.

  West Ham and Hertha both finished 10th last season, so it’s again a quite accurate translation.

  I wonder why Google Translate does that and whether the “Suggest a better translation” feature has anything to do with it? In that case I would suggest a lot of translations for Schalke articles, replacing Schalke with Dortmund and vice versa. Just to drive Schalke and Dortmund fans mad.

  Jan – totally off-topic but do you have any idea why every time I try to add a pic to the post the word press pop-up box just freezes blank? I don’t know if anyone else has an issue but it stalls most of the time. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for helping out with the other situation as well -

  I’ve really only used Word Press with Safari on a regular basis and never had any problems. The only thing that doesn’t work for me is the Flash Uploader so I always have to switch to the Browser Uploader.

  Now you remind me, Jan. I think it’s just the other day I read somewhere on my Google Translate where Bayern is being translated as Arsenal. Yeah. I was surprised, to say the least.

  Maybe. One-touch football! Hang on, his former Monaco coach is now at Arsenal. Anyways, I better shut up now. There is an Arsenal fan in my family, my brother.

  Given if he ever finds out I start to associate the club he supports with Bayern…but then again, in a way I have to be grateful to my brother given it was him who used to talk about Jens Lehmann ahead of the World Cup two years ago. To be honest (you people can shoot me after this), I didn’t know about ‘Mad Jens’ until my brother talk about who was at goal for his club then. I am always so far behind with such matters. And when I re-think how my brother came to support Arsenal, it left me kind of amused. I wondered if it had anything to do with the days when Arsenal was being nicknamed the ‘Invicibles’ and if my memory serves me right, Lehmann was already there by then.

  My brother and I may have squabbles in the past over even the most trivial matters (he had even learned to ‘bully’ his older sister when he was a baby and that is another story by itself), but this is one thing I can be secretly grateful to him (apart from me being hate to admit at times, his sense of humour is always a source of comic relief in the family). Talking about a goalkeeper by the name of Jens Lehmann. And from the club my brother supports, now ‘Mad Jens’ being at the Bundesliga club I support. Ha.
