Franz Beckenbauer’s NASL Farewell Match
By: Jan | September 1st, 2007Some users on YouTube have remarkable collections of vintage football videos, and I hope that their accounts aren’t as much in danger of being shut down for copyright violations, as the ones that are providing more recent football footage. The following video comes from y2santos who shares a big collection of US football soccer related videos. It’s Franz Beckenbauer’s farewell match for New York Cosmos in 1980.
Beckenbauer joined Cosmos in 1977, where he played alongside Pele and won three titles in four seasons. His move to the USA also meant the end of his career for the German national team. Players who earned their money abroad had a more difficult time making it into the national team back in the 70s, and the NASL was regarded as a Mickey Mouse league, which didn’t help either. Up to this point Beckenbauer had won everything with the national team and accumulated a record 102 caps, so he probably didn’t really care.
