European Misery: Werder Bremen makes it 5 Defeats from 6 Matches for the Bundesliga

By: Jan | October 3rd, 2007

Werder Bremen 1 – 3 Olympiakos Piräus

If you take a very cautious look at the opponents, the Bundesliga had to face so far, you could argue that it’s a possibility to lose matches against the likes of Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. But then there were three more matches, which were must-wins if you want to play any part in Europe this season. Stuttgart and Bremen lost both and only Schalke got their must-win win in Trondheim. Both Stuttgart and Bremen now face an uphill battle to salvage their Champions League campaigns. They can obviously still qualify for the next round, but they could also easily end up at the very bottom of their groups and end their European adventures this year already. Schalke have put themselves in a good position to take the third place for sure at least, and can now try to get results against the group favourites.

And now I’m looking forward to a hopefully less frustrating UEFA Cup night tomorrow.

Okay, so it’s not a battle to the death for third place. I guess being champions of France and Germany doesn’t carry much weight in Europe.

No it doesn’t. I doesn’t carry much weight in Germany either, as Stuttgart is ranked 10th and Bayern is already 10 points ahead of them. I hate the inconsistency of many clubs in this league.

Hey, what you call inconsistency, some would call depth. The opposite is Scotland, where it’s a good bet one of two teams will win every year. I would prefer “inconsistency”.

But I would like this depth to perform better on the European stage and not have a great year followed by a shit year.:-)
