CONCACAF GOLD CUP: Hamburg beats Stuttgart to Title

By: Jan | June 24th, 2007

Benny FeilhaberIt’s the off-season and I have to spread out my more relevant posts wisely so that I can bridge the time gap until the Bundesliga starts rolling again. That’s why this post is slightly off-topic but I found a way to bend it like it has anything to do with the Bundesliga. Those who know the Bundesliga squads in and out will easily be able to decrypt the title: Benny Feilhaber (Hamburg) vs Pavel Pardo and Ricardo Osorio (both Stuttgart). Another way to phrase it would be: CONCACAF Gold Cup Final USA vs Mexico. I’m sure anyone who is a fan of either of the two teams got his share of coverage elsewhere and I didn’t have the chance to see it to make any comments. Or better it wasn’t broadcasted here (probably on pay-tv?) and my Mac won’t play those funky P2P streams.:-/ The US team won the match in a good old come-from-behind fashion 2:1. Landon Donovan who sort of played for Bayer Leverkusen (=loaned out ot San Jose Earthquakes most of the time) converted a penalty to equalise and Hamburg’s Benny Feilhaber scored the winner with a beautiful volley. The website Yanks Abroad, which I visited beforehand to make sure I don’t accidentally miss out on any other US Bundesliga players, even called it a Wundertor. I’m all for the integration of as many German loan words into the English language as possible. This makes my job much easier and I can even pretend to possess a rich vocabulary. I would then also suggest to use the word Traumtor as a loan word even if it’s more difficult to pronounce. In return I’m willing to promote the usage of Wundertor in the German language, because it’s actually quite nice as well but used very rarely if at all. Another one would be Übertor, which I would probably reserve for those goals ranking above Wunder- and Traumtor. Anyway, here is the Youtube version of Benny’s beauty shot:

This goal would conclude the post very nicely but I have to include the following two photos from the final as well. I don’t know whether one half of the stadium was empty all the time or whether there were only Mexican fans in the stadium who already left but it’s a very strange sight for a home game. Even more so in a tournament final played at home. I don’t mean to poke fun at US soccer fans, it’s just an odd sight.

USA vs Mexico
USA - Mexico Celebrations

PS: Kasey Keller - Borussia Mönchengladbach - I didn’t forget him of course but I didn’t know where to mention him in the post either.

Wundertor is a pretty awesome word, I have to say. We really do need to start using it more.

I believe Keller was released and is unsigned at the moment.

The game was sold out so I guess they were all Mexican fans. Too funny.

That was a great game. It’s too bad you weren’t able to catch it.

Shame mexico lost. I blame in part Hugo Sanchez (Who was the best mexican player in the history, but as manager he is not good enough). Osorio and Marquez (Barcelona) played so-so, they didnt play as they play with their respective clubs. I think that the first goal shouldn be valid as i think it was no penalty there , and the second goal just reminded me about the Argentinian goal of Maxi in the world cup against us (mexico).

Great wundertor from Mr. Hamburg. Along with Howard and the junior Bradley, he’s quickly making himself indispensable to the US team. I wonder if this will lead to more appearances on the pitch for Hamburg’s first team?

From Yanks Abroad: “Playing an alleged home game at Soldier Field, the Americans were welcomed to a sold out crowd of over 60,000 that was expected to be 90% Mexican by Sunil Gulati’s own admission.”

I guess that explains the empty stands. Perhaps we can require support for USMNT as part of the proposed American immigration bill? Might sell some more shirts, Sunil!

Brian: yes, you are right. But he hasn’t picked a new club yet and because he played in the Bundesliga last season I thought I should mention him anyway.

BTW if anyone is interested: He gave an interview for Borussia’s online video service - sends some farewells and talks about the future:
    http://www.borussia.de/de/kasey_keller,142391,0.html

Steven: let’s put it this way: just because I couldn’t catch it live doesn’t mean I won’t see it at all.:-)

Fernando: the Feilhaber goal reminded me more of Hitzlsperger’s title deciding goal against Cottbus. I would rate the Maxi goal to be above those efforts. So if Feilhaber scored a Wundertor then Maxi scored an Übertor to stay within my loan word promotion mode. Anyway, I was surprised to read that Mexico has such a bad track record against the US.

Juliet: Feilhaber profited from all the injuries in the squad last season. His debut in the team received a lot of praise from the press. He spend time on the bench again when the regulars came back but still showed good performances as a substitute. And: he’s still very young. But I guess, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next season.
