Bundesliga stars missing in Africa
By: Dave | January 20th, 2008If it’s still the winter break in Germany and the year ends in an even number then it must be the African Cup of Nations or is that the Africa Nations Cup or the Africa Cup or Afrikameisterschaft or Cup of African Nations?
Whatever it is, Daryl has written some excellent previews for those interested and expect some live blogging on the football festival.
While many Premiership clubs in the UK will be losing important players, the Bundesliga is not so heavily affected with just 12 players making their way to Ghana.
So which players will be missing?
Hamburg are the only team to lose three squad members with Mohamed Zidan (Egypt), Timothee ’stinky finger’ Atouba (Cameroon) and Collin Benjamin (Namibia) all possibly being absent until Febuary 10 while Bielefeld (Sibusiso Zuma and Rowen Fernandez - both South Africa) and Leverkusen (Karim Haggui - Tunisia and Hans Adu Sarpei - Ghana) lose two players apiece.
The Ivory Coast have claimed Boubacar Sanogo from Bremen and Arthur Boka from Stuttgart. Near neighbours Bochum and Duisburg must do without Jean Joel Epalle and Mohamadou Idrissou who are both in the Cameroon squad. Completing the dozen, Nuremberg’s Jawhar M’Nari will represent Tunisia.
If there’s any I’ve missed out let me know.

I think counting Zidan might be pushing the envelope

I hope he’ll rediscover his goalscoring touch during the ACN/ANC/CAN. At least to an extent that he can help Hamburg a little bit in the second half of the season, so that they can sell him again in the summer without losing too much money.

Johnny, Had to look up what ‘pushing the envelope’ meant. Thought you might have been referring to the Robert Hoyzer case:)
