Bundesliga Season Finale: Full-Time

By: Jan | May 19th, 2007

Stuttgart's captain Fernando Meira lifts the trophySchalke 04 had to pay tribute to the high tempo of their game in the first half. They tried everything but couldn’t add any more goals to the score. Bielefeld even scored in overtime to make it 2:1. Meanwhile Stuttgart took matters into their own hands and scored the second goal against Cottbus which secured them the first German championship in fifteen years. Cottbus played a great match and tried everything to allow Schalke a fair chance to win the title. Stuttgart is definitely a worthy champion. They now won a club record eight games in a row. Kudos to manager Armin Veh and sporting director Horst Heldt who were the architects behind Stuttgarts success.

Elsewhere: my predictions about the UI-Cup race turned out to be true. Hamburg comfortably beat Aachen 4:0 while Dortmund lost in Leverkusen (2:1) and Hannover lost their home game against Nuremburg (0:3). Hamburg is the second best team of the second half of the season; behind new champions Stuttgart. Makes you wonder what they could have achieved without their abysmal first half of the season.

Other results: Wolfsburg - Bremen 0:2, Frankfurt - Berlin 1:2, Bayern Munich - Mainz 5:2, Mönchengladbach - Bochum 0:2
