The Village People feat. the Mannschaft
By: Jan | July 18th, 2007The blog Who Ate All The Pies recently celebrated ten footballers who rap, and I had planned to use this post to add a player from the Bundesliga to this list. It’s Schalke 04’s Christian Pander, a talented left back, who had a bit of bad luck with injuries so far. A knee injury forced him to take a break from football for over a year. In his second life he goes by the name of Funky Pee. I’m not sure whether that name is incidental or accidental. Funky Pee likes to drop a rhyme in his spare time and started his own label called Hood Productions. He even has his own MySpace page where you can check out some of his tracks.
But blogging about Funky Pee’s credibility as a rapper isn’t nearly as exciting as posting a music video featuring the Village People and the German national team. It was their official song for the World Cup 1994 in the USA with the slightly wistful title Far Away In America. I don’t know who within the German FA had the idea, and why they didn’t ask The Hoff, or if they did ask him, why he wasn’t available. But the Village People sure wouldn’t refuse an offer to perform with someone called The Mannschaft. The song didn’t help the team defend their title, but I doubt any other national team (or even club level team) can challenge their musical collaboration. Although you are free to add a YouTube’ish link to the comments section, if you believe you know of a team that came close.
P.S.: I like it how Jürgen Klinsmann always gives a hundred percent in whatever he does.

Hehe that’s all kinds of awesome! Klinsmann looked like he was having a blast - it’s a shame he didn’t have the Mannschaft do another song for the 2006 World Cup!

I have to watch this in little increments just to digest its amazingness.
