Silly: A Penalty Shootout in the NASL
By: Jan | September 1st, 2007Another great clip provided by y2santos. It’s the NASL Soccer Bowl 1981 between Chicago Sting and New York Cosmos. Cosmos was coached by German legend Hennes Weisweiler at that time, but this video is really more about moustaches and Ice hockey inspired penalties.

What kind of crazy PK-shoot out is this? Did all the leagues do this or was this just a weird NASL thing?

This must have been a weird NASL thing. I’ve never seen penalties taken like that until I stumbled upon this clip yesterday.

MLS did this when it first started. It’s stupid, anybody with any nerves will beat the keeper every time…if he comes off the line then just lob him, if he says on the line blast it in from inside 11 meters. The only way you miss it is by choking.

Jason: Oh, MLS adopted this way of doing shootouts? Interesting.
Although I think your remarks also hold true for our normal penalty shootouts: the only way you miss it is by choking. Because in theory you could put it in the upper left or right corner every time and no goalkeeper would stand a chance. I think Italy did it like this during the penalty shootout in the final against France last year…

Weird. Thank god MLS doesn’t do that anymore.
