Name the Brazilian

Hertha\'s Samba Faction

If you had a German name and researched it, you’d probably end up learning that 800 years ago a poor pig farmer built his hut right beside a hole in the ground and so your family was subsequently named after this hole. A Portuguese or Brazilian name on the other hand is more like a soap opera and includes the names of your father, mother, first girlfriend, your father’s mistress, your mother’s gardener etc. They have quite exciting stories to tell, but are way too long to fit onto a football jersey. This circumstance turned Edison Arantes do Nascimento into Pele or Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite into Kaka.

There aren’t nearly enough Portuguese players in the Bundesliga to make the following quiz any challenge. But as we found out in a previous post, it’s mandatory for Bundesliga clubs to have at least one Brazilian player in their squad. Now it’s time for you to prove how much you know about them, by decrypting which players are hidden behind the following “real names”:

1. Edinaldo Batista Líbano
2. Marcio Rafael Ferreira de Souza
3. Ronaldo Aparecido Rodrigues
4. Paulo César Fonseca do Nascimento
5. Claudiano Bezerra da Silva
6. Raoul Eduardo Travassos Tagliari
7. Carlos Luciano da Silva
8. Pedro Geromel
9. Leonardo de Déus Santos
10. Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri

Name more…

Ack! This is tough. From the looks at it, half of them are at Hertha. And now the Bundesliga has lost BM’s Lucio and WB’s Diego.

I’m sitting here wondering if Cacau is included. I assumed he was Brazilian up until he started showing up in Jogi Loew’s lineup (and then I thought it was just the DFB ensuring the team had at least one Brazilian).

    Ok, wild guesses:

    1. Naldo
    2. Rafael
    3. Cicero
    4. César
    5. da Silva
    6. Rodnei
    7. Lucio
    8. Geromel
    9. Kaka
    10. Cacau
