My Ongoing HSV Birthday Greetings Collection
By: Jan | July 14th, 2009Over two years ago I got curious about Internet based club TV services, which more and more Bundesliga clubs were launching at the time. With Cologne being a prominent absentee, I decided to make my pick of test subscriptions based on presumed benchmark (Bayern), sympathies (Hamburg) and Champions League football (Stuttgart). Predictably Bayern had indeed the most polished and professional service, which was also the only one offering English dubbed content. It felt a bit distanced and superficial too. Stuttgart couldn’t match the production values but content is king and the then Bundesliga champions were head and shoulders above the rest. Hamburg meanwhile had easily the worst club TV with an awful to navigate menu, bare bones content and a level of amateurishness which made me want to apply for a job there so I could fix all the audio level issues. All of this may have changed dramatically in two years time of course.
When my subscriptions ran out I never ever heard of either Bayern or Stuttgart again. The same could basically be said about Hamburg too, except when it is my birthday…

Last year Romeo Castelen, Hermann the Dinosaur and Joris Mathijsen mailed me to congratulate me.

And this year Marcell Jansen did the same. At least that’s what he wrote. The photo rather suggests that he is about to go, I don’t know, there’s definitely something manic in his eyes and smile.
Next year I want Frank Rost please.

Very nice. In regarding to the photo with Marcell Jansen on it, I was actually half-expecting the birthday greeting in German.

Jansen looks a little like he’s about to thrust that cake into the photographer’s face.

g: I had hoped that it was maybe a routine process at Hamburg that new players take a medical, sign a contract, smile to the press and are then handed a cake for the obligatory HSV birthday email. This way it looks like they pick one player each year who maybe came late to training or something. Too bad…
