Uncanny Resemblance: Jogi Löw and Tom Cruise

Jogi Löw attended the match between Karlsruhe and Bremen disguising as Tom Cruise. What is even more worrying than that, is the current form of most of his designated Euro 2008 players. Per Mertesacker is probably playing his worst ever season. Torsten Frings was injured again. Bernd Schneider will most probably miss the Euros due to injury. Miroslav Klose is in the midst of his annual form crisis. Lukas Podolski isn’t doing any better. Marcell Jansen. Philipp Lahm. I could probably name a complete out-of-form Germany starting XI.

  A very easy date to remember, Jan. Because on a personal scale for me, that is actually on the eve of my sister’s birthday. I remembered when I first saw the date, that came to mind.

  Back on topic. Jogi looking like Tom Cruise, eh? I think this was some months back already but then I came across a report of Bild at that time of the uncanny resemblance.

  When I first looked at the highlights (got it from 101 Great Goals), for some reason, the whole mafia look comes to mind immediately. Even Fabio Capello, being Italian himself, does not look like one (the England manager was at the Chelsea-Manchester United match). Okay, those Italian stereotypes…

  Not raining on my parade, please (though I know the current situation). It has just been confirmed yesterday in my family that we will be getting Euro 2008 coverage on the pay-TV (my father have to sign up with the provider). Initially weeks ago when the package was launched, he has doubts of subscribing because of England’s absence but I refused to give up. Germany is the reason why I am looking forward to Euro 2008. We have to pay a one-off subscribing fee to have the tournament shown on the pay-TV, you see. It was the same thing during the World Cup two years ago.

  I now remembered something, Jan. I remembered reading when Jogi was the coach of Karlsruhe in the then-2. Bundesliga, at the end of the 1999/2000 season, the club went down to the Regionalliga.

  What I am trying to know is what I came across over the weekend. The suffocating part is making me scratching my head. Obviously German is not my first language and I had spent like the entire weekend and yesterday Monday trying to figure out what happened when Jogi was at the Karlsruhe-Bremen match.

  Considering I only follow the Bundesliga after the World Cup, there’s still a lot I have to read up on the Bundesliga and German football in general. Damn the language barriers.

  Now that you’ve brought it up, it’s impossible not to name the Inconsistent International German XI:

  Lehmann
  Lahm* Mertesacker Metzelder Jansen
  Hitzlsperger Frings Schneider Schweinsteiger
  Kuranyi Klose

  *Not that I think Lahm’s been actively bad, just not sparkling.

  As most of these guys are starters, here’s to hoping Jogi Loew’s ‘German International Self-Esteem Boot Camp,’ featuring a rousing keynote speech from Ballack, brings the guys into form for the Euros.

  Diana: he was just happy to see Jogi. So they hugged and this guy must have overdone it a bit.

  Juliet: very good choice. Though Hildebrand had a topsy-turvy season in Valencia’s goal as well. Podolski for Kuranyi might be another option. Trochowski could be another inconsistent midfielder. There are many ways to suck at the Euros. Anyway, as you said, so far the national team had a magical impact on the performance of a few players, so I’m not panicking.
