Jens Lehmann breaks German Goalkeeping Record

By: Jan | February 6th, 2008

A run of 531 minutes without conceding a goal means Jens Lehmann set up a new national team record, following Germany’s 3-0 victory over Austria. A record he held anyway (530 minutes without conceding a goal between 2002 and 2005). Not bad, and to honour his achievement, here is a highlight reel of his performance against Austria.

I love Jens to bits, always have and always will, but my new theory is that his entire career is really just an elaborate piece of performance art. No one has such a spectacular ability for random self-sabotage.

Abby, you are right. But the most disturbing part is how he makes this self-sabotage really…um…hot.

Yes. That too, Laurie. (By which I mean, I agree.)

Not the only record. He has also overtaken Kahn with the most minutes on the pitch as a complete and utter douche bag.

I can’t wait until Neuer and Adler are the top two choices

Neuer has assembled an impressive list of blunders this season, which would make Paul Robinson proud. But if there’s a goalkeeper who could give meaning to the term “modern goalkeeper”, then it is him, so I hope he learns his lessons and gets all the basics right.

But Enke and Hildebrand would do a great job in the meantime I’m sure. Lehmann could have spared himself of all the discussions which are sure to surface, now that he played one of his worst matches for Austria, if he had chosen to play for Dortmund week in week out.

But that would be both an easy and sensible solution, Jan, and Jens doesn’t do those.

True, and I wanted to say against Austria. I just wished he was an Austrian player last night.:-)

From the look of things, Mertesacker would’ve been a better choice in goal. Mad hot Jens didn’t do himself any favors by giving us his Scott Carson impression. I noticed in the commercial Jan posted that Hildebrand appeared to be the ‘keeper of choice. Now, whether that’s due to his pretty golden locks vs. Jens’ curls, or actual playing time vs. benchwarming at Arsenal, only the producers know… In Jogi we trust.
