Germany 2-1 Slovakia … A win’s a win
By: Jan | June 7th, 2007Well, that wasn’t the prettiest win ever. Nowhere near as dominating as the last time we played the Slovaks, 4-1 at Bratislava, but three points are three points.
That was carbon copied from Ian’s post about Scotland’s win over the Faroe Islands but suits this match perfectly well so why the hassle and reinvent the wheel every time? What is left for me to add are some vital match statistics:
Precise passes: around one or two I guess
Predictable moves: plenty
Own goals: two out of three
Scored his first goal for Germany: Christoph Metzelder
Scored his first goal against Germany: Christoph Metzelder
Mostly harmless Slovaks: eleven
Out of breath Germans: ten during the second half, not sure about Jens Lehmann
Klose Involvement Factor: 4 = had something to do with both German goals (+2) but didn’t score them (-1), finally stated the obvious: will go to Bayern Munich, 2008 at the latest (+3)
Let’s Kiss and Make Up Factor: 2 = Frings (+1) and Klose (+1) post match interview: we had a little dispute but that’s it, as far as we are concerned it’s over and done with
The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth: you media people definitely take things far too serious (Frings, post match interview)
Euro 2008: I say book your tickets. Germany moved 5 points clear of the Czech Republic and 6 points clear of the Republic of Ireland.
Ballack, Podolski, Schweinsteiger and Co.: were out injured and it showed
The best team in Europe at the moment: with all players on board Germany is still a contender together with France and Portugal as far as I’m concerned.
Time to move a little bit north by northwest, away from Germany, to a little island off the coast of Europe to the pundits at SkySports to provide us with the video highlights. And a belated congratulations to Schalke 04 for winning the Bundesliga title. 49 years, wasn’t it? About damn time boys.

Der Hammer must’ve snuck the Schale into his bags when he made that midnight transfer to Schalke the other night. Hope Hildebrand & Hilbert don’t find out. I wouldn’t want to make those guys angry.
I got the feeling Lehmann was taking the whole thing pretty easy yesterday. Didn’t it look like he was ready to have a seat midway through the second half and let Timo play?
After the game, the feed showed Klose reaching out to give Frings a hug. I think the soothing embrace of the national team won’t let anyone feel bad for too long.

I thought for some time that Lehmann would surely ask to be substituted any minute as well. Thought he might have been injured or something. Didn’t really have much to do either.
I think the national team is currently a place the players really like to go to and that’s a big difference to the years before. Back then you thought they were rather annoyed to be forced to do their duty. Now you have a player like Ballack who is injured but spent the whole time with the team. And I think that both the staff and the teammates were involved to deescalate the situation between Klose and Frings. And Klose has finally spoken out what his plans are. Happy endings all over the place.
