Beardwatch: Christoph Metzelder

What is it about injuries and beards? Following Kevin Kuranyi’s example, Metzelder used his injury-enforced time out to grow a proper beard and probably write a manifesto on the future of football.

  No wonder the AFP report I was reading about him hoping to return to the pitch in two weeks’ time says this…

  ‘And a return to football would also have a huge impact on his appearance and a clean shave beckons when he laces up his boots again.

  “I said before the operation, I would leave my beard untouched until I was fully recovered,” said Metzelder.’

  For some reason now, the photo just reminds me of Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf. Just saying.
