More Obscene Gestures from the Germany-Cyprus Match

By: Jan | November 20th, 2007

It seems the uncovering of Jens Lehmann’s obscene gesture towards the crowd in Hannover was only the tip of the iceberg. Further study of the match video unveiled, that several other obscene gestures were performed by German players and the Danish referee during the match. Here is the evidence that has surfaced so far. Seems the German FA and UEFA will have their work cut out for them to clean up this mess.

Peter Rasmussen

The Danish referee leads UEFA’s Kick It Out campaign ad absurdum with this Hitler salute.

Who else than Mad Jens again. Giving someone the thumbs up is an obscene insult in Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria and parts of Italy and Greece, especially when combined with a sweep of the arms. In most places it roughly means, “Sit on my phallus, asshole,” and carries the same stigmatism as the middle finger.

Miroslav Klose

Someone needs to tell Miro that in Brazil this gesture is a reference to the anus or in some cases the vagina and is considered very offensive. Though by 2014 he is too old to play the World Cup in Brazil anyway.

Per Mertesacker

I’m sure this gesture is quite offensive for some people somewhere in the world as well.

Oh please.. Nonsense! All I see at the ref picture is him signaling a corner.. (even though it does look like fascist salute)

Arian: you’re right it’s nonsense, though it was intentional nonsense.:-)

Anyway, good to see you didn’t buy the fascist salute. I still remember Lukas Podolski sending a kiss to the crowd after scoring his penalty against Argentina. The TV cut from a wide angel to a close up and in the close up you could only see his arms spread out - somewhat reminiscent of the aforementioned gesture. This caused an absolutely ridiculous nervous outcry in parts of the blogging world.

Well I wouldn’t be surprised if someone really did consider that as a fascist salute. :)

    It’s a strange World after all… :)

    Hilarious picture entry, Jan. :D

I also just wanted to say thanks for making the Bundesliga blog such a fun place. I really enjoy your posts. While the typical transfer and match information is good to know, it’s also nice that you make efforts to post quirky news items and little known facts, all of which make the Bundesliga so interesting.
