DFB-Pokal First Round Draw
By: Jan | June 27th, 2009It’s time to brush up on your knowledge of provincial Germany and long forgotten club name prefixes. The draw for the first round of next season’s DFB-Pokal took place today.
Personal Picks of the Round:
Kickers Offenbach – Eintracht Frankfurt (Fierce Derby, Arch Rivals = Fun and Violence – not that the two should go together and hopefully it’ll be mostly peaceful)
Fortuna Düsseldorf – Hamburger SV (sure to become a 51500 sell out)
Union Berlin – Werder Bremen (Union’s fan renovated Old Forestry stadium deserved no less than the title holder for it’s first official match)
Everybody else
Germania Windeck – Schalke 04
Concordia Hamburg – TuS Koblenz
Sportfreunde Lotte – VfL Bochum
Tennis Borussia Berlin – Karlsruher SC
Dynamo Dresden – 1. FC Nürnberg

Dynamo Dresden – 1. FC Nürnberg: 8-time GDR champions vs. 8-time pre-Bundesliga champions. It’s a game worthy of the numbers, if not the “wow” factor.

I’ll have to do some reading up on 3 or 4 of those. At least one like “Concordia Hamburg” kinda tells me something without knowing the club. Ingolstadt-Augsburg ought be to be pretty fierce, even if it’s technically not a historical derby at all. Suppose Bayern will actually be playing at the Rhein-Neckar Arena (and how is not SAP Arena already?)

‘It’s time to brush up on your knowledge of provincial Germany and long forgotten club name prefixes.’
Thank you for reminding us about that, Jan.
I sure have to find out a bit more about SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, which my club has been drawn against. But it is definitely amazing that this being the first round of the draw, there have been intriguing ties already.
