DFB-Pokal: Berlin won’t be going to Berlin next Year
By: Jan | October 31st, 2007Since 1985 the final of the DFB-Pokal (German FA Cup) is played in the Olympiastadion in Berlin. A tradition that has spawned the popular fan chant “Berlin! Berlin! We’re going to Berlin!”, which was then reused to shout the German national team to the final of last year’s World Cup. Well, at least close to the final.
I don’t know whether it makes a lot of sense for Hertha BSC Berlin fans to chant “We’re going to Berlin!”. I’ve never paid attention to Hertha fan chants. Fact is, only Hertha’s amateur side has reached a final of the DFB Pokal since moving to the Olympiastadion (lost to Bayer Leverkusen in 1993). Hertha’s cup pedigree so far can only offer two cup final appearances. One in 1977 where they lost against FC Cologne, and the other one in 1979, where they lost against Fortuna Düsseldorf. This woeful history won’t change for at least another season, as third division side Wuppertaler SV eliminated Hertha from the competition. Send your condolences to Abby over at the Hertha Offside.
Josip Simunic did his part to help Hertha out of the competition. His temper took over once again and he saw a red card after 75 minutes. Wuppertal seized the opportunity and started scoring shortly afterwards. If Simunic has a familiar ring to you, then you might remember him from last year’s World Cup. He was the player that Graham Poll infamously had shown three yellow cards.
More DFB-Pokal action is due tonight, with a couple more chances for an upset.
