Matchday 2: Best of the Weekend Awards

By: Jan | August 20th, 2007

My biased preselection of this weekends greatest and worst moments, with two (or more) candidates to choose from for each category. I may use some sort of online voting system in the future, to make it easy for you to select your favourites. For now use the comments section to have your say instead.

Best way to bid farewell to Miroslav Klose

a) Werder Bremen’s sporting director Klaus Allofs
b) Werder Bremen’s fans
c) Werder Bremen’s Naldo

Best Franck Ribery Moment

a) Ribery scores a Panenka
b) Showboat skills that actually lead to a goal

Best Derby Goal

a) Christian Pander’s free kick (Schalke 04)
b) Gerald Asamoah’s flying header (Schalke 04)
Best Goal Celebration

a) The fierce derby goal celebration by Schalke’s Gerald Asamoah
b) The Bayern-has-never-been-so-much-fun Saturday afternoon goal celebration by Hamit Altintop

Good stuff. I’m surprised Klose is still standing today.

He is not exactly standing anymore, the two tackles by Naldo have left their marks on Klose’s knee and he will miss the friendly against England on Wednesday.

    C) Naldo’s Farewell to Klose

Naldo was clearly interested in injuring Klose. He should’ve been given a second yellow and sent off for the second tackle. I wish the DFB would review the match.

Yikes. I was only kidding about Klose standing. Apparently Naldo was not.

Juliet: I really should have included that one as well. I added it now.:-)

Although I believe Klaus Allof’s who said that Naldo is out of form and didn’t do it on purpose. And Klose played it down as well. Still amazing how he got out of that match with just one yellow card.
