Next up in my little countdown is a goal by Thomas Hitzlsperger. His nickname is “The Hammer” which he acquired during his time with Aston Villa in the English Premier League. It’s trivia knowledge that no German TV reporter fails to mention when a VfB Stuttgart match is on. Or in general: whenever Thomas Hitzlsperger is on TV someone will be quick to mention that his nickname is “The Hammer”. So I feel obliged to follow this little tradition and tell you as well that his nickname is indeed “The Hammer” and this goal explains nicely why people in England decided to call him that way.

I have to say I totally dig those two French dudes who did the commentary in this clip. “Quelle volley! Quelle volley, Julien!”, “Oh la la la la la!” and so on. Makes me want to watch more Bundesliga matches with French commentary. Btw: I forgot to give you some backstory to this goal. VfB Stuttgart needed at least a draw against Energie Cottbus to win the Bundesliga title. Hitzlsperger put them right back into the pole position with his goal. They went on to win the match 2:1 and secured their first Bundesliga title since 1992. Between 100.000 and 250.000 people (varies from source to source) partied on the streets in Stuttgart. Quite a few of those already watched the match on a giant screen on the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart. Here is how they saw the goal…

The only time I can stand bad quality videos is when they’re like that. Wicked!

Hitzlsperger has really progressed as a player this season. Slowly but steadily. Will be interesting to see how he will perform in the Champions League.
