Not Bad: 2. Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A average Attendance
By: Jan | October 24th, 2007This year’s second division (2. Bundesliga) has often been dubbed as the best ever. Part of it has been marketing by the TV stations, who hold the broadcasting rights, the other bit is true. There is an undoubtedly high number of former Bundesliga mainstays trying to make it back to the top flight.
To spice it up, there’s the cult club FC St. Pauli, who celebrate their return to professional football, and the billionaire backed village people of Hoffenheim, who invested a record €18m into their squad.
All of this also had an impact on the league’s average attendance figures so far. They don’t challenge the overall Ligue 1 and Serie A numbers, but hold up pretty well nonetheless. Just last weekend, 60.000 came to Munich to watch the derby against Fürth, and the classic between Mönchengladbach and Cologne was seen by 54.000.

It would interest me to see the change in Koln and M’bach since being relegated. Did it dip somewhat or significantly? And what would happen with someone like FCK if they were to go up? Would that 25K skyrocket?
As always you are the best Jan!

Hey, the comment about St. Pauli hurt. Now I am a cult member. If I weren’t so busy mutilating my genitalia and perfecting my Koolaid mix, I might write you a nasty letter

Chris:
Thx for the compliment. Cologne/Gladbach dropped from around 48.000/47.000 in the Bundesliga down to the current numbers. If they play a good role in the promotion race, their numbers might rise a little bit.Kaiserlautern is currently in a severe crisis (relegation spot). Once/If they get their campaign back on track the numbers should rise again. Kaiserlautern had an average attendance of 31.000 last season, and 33.000 during their last Bundesliga season. So, not a significant drop. Though, they had their stadium pimped up for the World Cup so once they get promoted they might see a more significant rise up to the 38.000 region I guess.
And sorry about the St. Pauli comment. I guess the many meanings of the German word kult don’t translate 100% to the English cult. I just meant to say that St. Pauli’s marketing and brand value as well as the club’s presence in popular culture is way higher than their actual success on the pitch. It’s hip to root for this underdog club.
