Champions League: Mental Blocks And Bus Blockades Are So Last Saturday

The 16th best team in the Bundesliga joined the elite circle of the 16 best teams in Europe, capping of a week of, mostly, pleasant surprises in the Champions League. Stuttgart followed up Bayern’s unexpected masterclass against Juve, with an equally unexpected performance. It wasn’t a masterclass, but they didn’t play like a relegation candidate either.

For the first eleven minutes of the game, Stuttgart pretended they were a top team in full gear. Urziceni believed them and allowed them to score three goals. For the rest of the first half Stuttgart then believed their own illusion and played it clever to the end. Urziceni came out fighting in the second half, getting an early goal and adding their bit to a more balanced second half. Stuttgart’s young stars played it too flashy and failed to convert their chances, but Urziceni failed to get a crucial second, to up the temperature of the match.
