Hertha BSC Berlin: Down There And Back Again

Berlin will no longer be the only major European capital without a top flight football team.

Hertha won promotion back to the Bundesliga with with three games left to play, after beating DFB-Pokal finalists Duisburg 1-0 in the 2. Bundesliga’s Monday night match. Since this was an away match, Hertha had to postpone the big party until Friday, when they’ll host 1860 Munich. But at least they had some T-Shirts and a banner prepared and coach Markus Babbel was given the obligatory beer shower treatment.

It was relatively smooth ride except for some slight hiccups towards the winter break and the lost derby at home against Union Berlin in front of a sold out Olympiastadion. Hertha’s budget was almost twice as high as their main competitors and they managed to hold on to some key players with Raffael and Adrian Ramos, so anything less than direct promotion would have been a disaster – particularly given Hertha’s tense financial situation. Back in the Bundesliga, Hertha will be among the low budget clubs again, and will have to go bargain hunting on the transfer market to reinforce the squad.
