Champions/Europa League Quarter-Final Draw
By: Jan | March 19th, 2010The bracket for the Champions League and Europa League has been completed, and the to road Madrid and Hamburg will lead our Bundesliga sides to England and Belgium first.
Champions League Quarter-Final
Bayern vs Manchester United
First Leg: Munich, 30th March 2010, 20.45h CET
Second Leg: Manchester, 7th April 2010, 20.45h CET
Bayern should be able to cope with the physical demands of this tie better than the aging Milan side, that Manchester overwhelmed in the previous round. Wayne Rooney may still brush aside Bayern’s defense as easily as Milan’s. While Manchester will be favorites, it at least promises to be a very entertaining two-legged affair. Check out the Bayern Offside for a more in-depth assessment of the tie.
Semi-Final: Should Bayern progress they will face the winner of Lyon vs Bordeaux (20th/21st April and 27th/28th April).
Europa League Quarter-Final
Hamburg vs Standard Liege
First Leg: Hamburg, 1st April 2010, 21.05h CET
Second Leg: Liege, 8th April 2010, 21.05h CET
Hamburg continue their Benelux knockout tradition. Hamburg continue to play the first leg at home. Hamburg shouldn’t continue with their adventurous defending and deal with the worrying (as in lack of) stamina of their players. Then another place in the semi-final is within reach.
Semi-Final: Should Hamburg progress they will face the winner of Fulham vs Wolfsburg (22nd and 29th April). Hamburg would once again play the first leg at home. Should Hamburg advance to the final in Hamburg, they would officially be the away team.
Fulham vs Wolfsburg
First Leg: London, 1st April 2010, 21.05h CET
Second Leg: Wolfsburg, 8th April 2010, 21.05h CET
Wolfsburg will have to face this season’s swashbuckling giant killers, who already eliminated the title holders Donezk and Italian record champions Juventus. The bad news for Fulham is, that Wolfsburg aren’t giants. Wolfsburg play in a similarly pint sized stadium. Wolfsburg are a midtable team as well. So the good news for Wolfsburg should be, that they have a real chance to reach the semi-final. Wolfsburg continue to have the (perceived) advantage of playing all second legs at home this season, which would include a potential semi-final.
Semi-Final: Should Wolfsburg progress they will face the winner of Hamburg vs Liege (22nd and 29th April). It could be an all Bundesliga affair again. It could be (with some good will) a northern derby again.

I expect Bayern to bottle it unless both Robben and Ribery show up, but comparatively easy path to the final for the winner.
The EL sides got a very favorable draw, unfortunately they will have to meet in the semifinal. Then again I am not sure they could have made the final on their own, especially not Hamburg.
I am really disappointed Werder were knocked out, no more games for Marin or Ozil. Was Mertesacker culpable on any of those goals? I don’t see how Low can ignore Marin any longer, he must be taken to South Africa. He can setup goals, score them, and ahem fell down easily in the penalty box.

I am nearly sure, that there will be a german semi-final…
Wolfsburg, with Grafite(back) and Dzeko(and Martins from the bench) will score and they will have Benaglio back (although Hitz wasn t bad yesterday).
The last seven games were 6 wins and 1 draw (18:5 goals) for Wolfsburg. So you can say, they are on a run…
Btw:Imo Wolfsburg rise has started in the first half of the Bayern-match,although they lost by some goals…Hamburg-Lüttich will be the same as the other matches in EL for Hamburg: Hamburg wins first leg and survives somehow the second leg
Liverpool-Lissabon: 50/50
Athletico-Valencia: 60/40 (important players missing)

Robben and Ribery could both show up and then there’s still the chance that Bayern’s defense will bottle it I think. Anyway, at the very least it’s a good benchmark.
The EL draw certainly was almost perfect. You would rather play Valencia or Liverpool in a one-off final than over two legs for sure.
Without seeing much of the Bremen match, I guess you could always blame their risky offside trap first and then blame the players and be about right.
I guess Löw will also certainly call Marin up for SA. But he just doesn’t seem to have much use for him in his line-ups. At least Marin would be a much better super sub than Odonkor.
Jansen is on fire as well.

BVBFan: Barzagli should be back as well. Player for player Wolfsburg certainly have the better squad. With the DFB-Pokal coming up, Hamburg will have a chance to recharge their batteries a bit. Maybe that helps. I wouldn’t mind a more comfortable two-legged victory for a change. At some point Hamburg should look like a genuine Europe League contender and not just a side that somehow manages to hang in there.

Low has no excuse to exclude Marin from SA. Hitzlsperger is toast. There is absolutely no reason at all anymore to select him for the NT. I actually feel a little bad about it!
Jansen is bound to get sick when the time comes. Right now he would be a lot more useful than Podolski. I still remember his good game against Serbia before the Euros.
Speaking of which Ballack will more likely than not get an injury the night before the final as usual. His age is showing, but he is still our linchpin. He certainly held Chelsea together. Is it me or has his fouls gotten a lot more cynical lately.

Hitzlspeger is a nice guy and it’s sad to see that his career took such a nosedive. I may not see a need for him in the NT but I don’t hate him of course. Unfortunately he made a panic move to Lazio, that only made matters worse. I hope he returns to maybe a midtable club in the Bundesliga in the summer, or maybe has a go at the EPL again, and enjoys a good club career.

Labbadia is the worst coach ever. As much as I loved Huuuuuub, Magath coming in would’ve had the guys in shape. Watching them now is pathetic. Though not having the full D seemed to hurt some, watching the complete defensive mental lapses was painful. And that falls on the coach.

that is to say, if we still had BMJ, we’d win the EL this year hands down. Although we have been knocked out by Germans the last two years…

-

I didn’t realize that Hamburg have been knocked out by Bundesliga sides in Europe twice in a row.

-

On away goals, no less. At home.

-

We’ve also lost out of Europe on away goals 3 of the last four years.

-

Well, away goals have been your best friend this season. So,maybe that’s a sign everything will be different this season.

-

Thats the hope!
