The Numbers Game: Matchday 2

Bayer 3-6 Gladbach

A record breaking weekend for the ages.

18. Torsten Frings scored from the spot against Cologne, successfully converting his 18th penalty in a row. The last time he missed a penalty was in 2002, when he was still at Dortmund. Typical German.

0-3 to 4-3. Mainz’s 4-3 victory over Wolfsburg was the biggest Bundesliga comeback since 1991, when Bochum beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-3 after going down 0-3.

0-3. Stuttgart were 0-3 behind at home after 45 minutes against Dortmund. Stuttgart had never been trailing 0-3 at home at half-time before. Stuttgart also never lost the first two matches of the season. Record breaking coach Christian Gross keeps breaking records.

24 / 7. Away teams scored 24 goals this weekend and 7 out of 9 matches were won by the away teams. Both has never happened before in Bundesliga history.

6. Leverkusen lost 3-6 against Mönchengladbach. Leverkusen have never before conceded 6 goals at home.

3.72. The first two Bundesliga matchdays have produced an average of 3.72 goals per match. If, in theory, the league keeps up this pace, then it would be the highest scoring season ever. Currently, the 1983/1984 season tops the charts with 3.58 goals per game.
